History

Following resolution adopted by World Food Conference, Nov 1974, establishment agreement adopted by 'United Nations Conference on the Establishment of an International Fund for Agricultural Development', 13 Jun 1976, Rome (Italy). Opened for signature, in accordance with Article 13.1 (a), on 20 Dec 1976, New York NY (USA). Entered into force 30 Nov 1977. Amendment of Article 6.8, 11 Dec 1986, entered into force 11 Mar 1987. Articles 3.3, 3.4, 4.2, 4.5, 5.2, 6.2, 6.4, 6.5, 6.6, 12 (a), 11.3 and schedules I, II and III amended, in accordance with Article 12, by Resolution 86/XVIII of the Governing Council on 26 Jan 1995. Amendments entered into force 20 Feb 1997. Article 4.1 amended, by Resolution 100/XX of Governing Council, 21 Feb 1997. Articles 7.2 (a) and (b) amended by Resolution 124/XXIV of the Governing Council, 21 Feb 2001 and again by Resolution 124/XXIV, 16 Feb 2006 as revised by Resolution 141/XXIX/Rev.1, amendments entered into force, 22 Dec 2006; Article 7.2 (g) amended by Resolution 143/XXIX, 16 Feb 2006 - amendments entered into force, 16 Aug 2006. A specialized agency of the United Nations within F-XF1000 - United Nations System, linked to E-XE3377 - ECOSOC. Although not one of the financial institutions set up following the Bretton Woods Conference, 22 Jul 1944, Bretton Woods NH (USA), IFAD is nevertheless sometimes included when referring to the E-XE4376 - Bretton Woods Institutions (BWIs). Statutes registered in 'UNTS 1/16041'.

Aims

Focus on agriculture and reduce poverty in rural areas of developing countries, by helping poor rural people to increase their food production and incomes, through investment in 6 main areas: Natural resources, especially land and water; Improved agricultural technologies and production services; Rural financial services; Transparent and competitive markets for agricultural inputs and products; Opportunities for rural off-farm employment and enterprise development; Local and national policy and programming processes, with emphasis on seeing smallholder farmers as business people and entrepreneurs.

Structure

Governing Council (meets annually), in which all members are represented. Votes are based on membership and on share of their paid contributions within replenishments. Executive Board, comprising 18 members (8 from List A, 4 from List B, 6 from List C) and 18 alternates, elected by Council for 3-year term, headed by President. Houses: F-XF5729 - International Land Coalition (ILC).
