History

Jan 1975, Honolulu HI (USA), as International Centre for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM) -- Centre international de gestion des resources aquatiques biologiques, with sponsorship from the The Rockefeller Foundation, as part of its Conquest of Hunger Programme. Incorporated in the Philippines, 1977. Since 1992, a research centre of CGIAR System Organization (CGIAR).

Aims

Help eradicate hunger and poverty by harnessing the benefits of fisheries and aquaculture; make small-scale fisheries more resilient and productive; support adoption of sustainable aquaculture that specifically benefits the poor.

Activities

Carries out research for development with partners. Bases in 8 countries; works in over 25 countries with over 200 partners representing 50 countries. Key competencies: policy economics and social sciences; natural resource management; aquaculture and genetic improvement. Delivers science-based services and solutions (knowledge, expertise, methods, tools, technologies) in aquaculture and fisheries management addressing poverty, hunger and environmental degradation across Africa, Asia and the South Pacific. Instrumental in setting up, and now coordinates: International Network on Genetics in Aquaculture (INGA); Network of Tropical Aquaculture and Fisheries Professionals (NTAFP).
