1973, as United Nations Sudano-Sahelian Office – Bureau des Nations Unies pour la région soudano-sahélienne. Transferred, 1976, to E-XE3382 - UNDP, 1976. Name changed in 1994 to Office to Combat Desertification and Drought (UNSO) – Bureau de la lutte contre la désertification et la sécheresse – Oficina de Lucha contra la Desertificación y la Seguia – Bjuro po Borbe s Opustynivaniem i Zasuhoj. Headquarter relocated from New York NY (USA) to Nairobi (Kenya), 1 Jul 2001. Current name adopted Feb 2002. Replaced by Global Policy Centre on Resilient Ecosystems and Desertification (GC-RED).

Operates at field level through UNDP country offices and extends its activities to UNDP programme countries in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
