Aims

Promote the interests of staff of the United Nations and its specialized agencies; seek fair treatment for all staff in matters of remuneration and benefits and conditions of security at all duty stations; enable member associations to coordinate their policies and activities in order to help attain the aims set forth in the Charter of the United Nations; promote development of an international civil service and protect the interests of international civil servants; represent staff at interagency level; strive to improve the image of the international civil service in the eyes of member states, the media and the public.

Activities

Defends interests of international civil servants before inter-agency bodies and legislative organs of the United Nations on common system issues; coordinates use of the appeal process against measures or decisions of doubtful legal validity; participates in cost-of-living surveys; organizes seminars, workshops and working groups; coordinates staff action and keeps staff representatives and the press aware of current issues; undertakes missions to duty stations where staff problems arise; provides support and material assistance on request and intervenes to safeguard staff interests. As part of the staff system, liaises with: United Nations System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB); International Civil Service Commission (ICSC) (and subsidiary organs); and, together with these bodies, with the United Nations General Assembly Fifth Committee.
