The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

Founded 1990, as a network of NGOs, as a joint project of European Environmental Bureau (EEB) and the Hellenic Society for the Protection of the Environment and the Cultural Heritage (Elliniki Etairia), in close cooperation with Arab NGO Network for Environment and Development (RAED). Since Mar 1996 functions as a federation of Mediterranean NGOs. Registered in accordance with Greek law.

Aims

Protect the natural environment (flora and fauna, biotopes, forests, coasts, natural resources, climate) and the cultural heritage (archaeological monuments, traditional settlements, cities, etc) of the entire Mediterranean region; promote sustainable development in a peaceful Mediterranean.

Activities

Acts as a technical and political platform for the presentation of views and intervention of NGOs in the Mediterranean. In cooperation with governments, intergovernmental and international organizations and other socio-economic partners, plays an active role for the development of policies for the protection of the environment and the promotion of sustainable development of the Mediterranean; assists the establishment, strengthening, cooperation and coordination of Mediterranean NGOs and facilitates their efforts by ensuring flow of appropriate information among relevant bodies; (co) organizes conferences and meetings; supports organization of roundtable discussions. Key areas of work: networking; NGO capacity building; promotion and drafting of common NGO policies; international collaboration; raising public awareness; participation and consensus building; research; environmental education.
