History
1 Mar 1986, as a regional project of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) financed by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and based in Bahrain. Became an independent Arab intergovernmental organization, 24 June 1993, when constitution entered into force. Headquarters moved to Casablanca (Morocco), Sep 2000. Also referred to as Fish Marketing Information, Promotion and Technical Advisory Services for Arab Countries -- Service d'information sur la commercialisation, la promotion, et de conseils techniques de la pêche pour les pays arabes.
Aims
Assist the region's fisheries to develop and adapt to present and future market demand for fishery products; make the most effective use of available fishery resources and aquaculture production; contribute to an improved stability in supply and demand for fishery products in the region and so improve fish consumption and food security; maximize exploitation of all available export opportunities within the Arab region and in world markets to develop trade and create employment opportunities; promote technical and economic cooperation in the fishery sector between Member States.

Activities
Provides information on marketing opportunities and supply prospects for fishery products within and outside the region; advises the fish processing industry on product specifications, processing methods and quality standards in accordance with market requirements; identifies new niche markets for products from underutilized fishery resources; undertakes research and studies on fish processing and markets; collects and disseminates fish marketing information and prices through a series of publications; provides training in marketing techniques and in quality assurance of fishery products to private sector operators, government institutions and agencies; identifies investment opportunities and prepares investment profiles. Organizes: Annual Buyer-Seller Meeting for importers and exporters of fishery products within and outside the region; regional seminars on quality assurance and food safety for the fish processing industry; fisheries commodity conferences; workshops. Participates in fairs and exhibitions dealing with fishing sector.
