History

Established 2003, within the framework of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Full title: INFOSA - Marketing Information and Technical Advisory Services for the Fisheries Industry in Southern Africa. INFOPECHE Unit in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. Hosted by the Government of Namibia.

Aims

Promote and develop fish trade in Southern Africa; contribute to the development and modernization of the fisheries sector in Southern Africa; contribute to a more balanced supply of fisheries products in the region; contribute to the development of aquaculture in Southern Africa; make best use of the export opportunities within and outside Africa; promote technical and economic cooperation among contracting partners.

Activities

Assists companies in the industry to find buyers for their products or to find suppliers for those who are in the market to buy through: maintaining an updated computerized register of regional producers and international buyers of seafood products; organizing buyer-seller meetings in the region; participating in international exhibitions and fairs to promote seafood products from the SADC region. Keeps the industry updated through: publishing of a newsletter; participation in the global Fish Info Network. Publishes market studies on products of interest to the SADC region, in cooperation with other regional services. Offers technical advice to producers in the region, ranging from product development, efficiency improvements, to quality control systems. Advises industry and small-scale sectors on aquaculture from production to harvesting and marketing. Advice is available on request, and covers such issues as: plant design and layout; quality assurance systems; HACCP; ISO; reduction of post harvest losses; better utilization of raw material; product development; new and more efficient technology. Offers specialized consulting services. Organizes: occasional regional and international events; training courses and technical seminars in Quality Assurance, Marketing and Aquaculture in member countries.
