History

9 Aug 1973, by Resolution 1818 (LV) of E-XE3377 - ECOSOC, as a regional commission of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN), integrating U-XU4112 - United Nations Economic and Social Office in Beirut (UNESOB), set up in 1963. Commenced operations in Jan 1974. Original title: United Nations Economic Commission for Western Asia (ECWA) -- Commission économique des Nations Unies pour l'Asie occidentale (CEAO) -- Comisión Económica de las Naciones Unidas para el Asia Occidental (CEPAO). Current title adopted 1985. Original membership comprised UN member states which formerly belonged to UNESOB, with further applications for membership decided upon by ECOSOC on recommendation of the Commission. ECOSOC Resolution 2089 (LXIII), 22 Jul 1977, amended terms of reference as recommended by the Commission so as to provide for the membership of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO); Egypt was admitted to membership at the same time. Sudan was admitted 2008.

Support economic and social development in the countries of the region; promote cooperation; encourage interaction; promote exchange of experiences, best practices and lessons learned.

Structure

/Policy making organs/: Biennial Meeting provides overall direction to the work of the secretariat. Specialized subsidiary inter-governmental committees (7): Energy; Water Resources; Social Development; Transport; Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization; Statistics; Women. Consultative Committee on Science and Technology - high level technical committee; Advisory Committee of Ambassadors. /Executive direction and management/ Composed of the Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) - provides overall direction and integrated management, programme oversight, planning and coordination, as well as policy guidelines to the substantive divisions, the technical cooperation programme and other support services. /Programme support/ Administrative Services Division and Programme Planning and Technical Cooperation Division provide programme support.
