History
to administer Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal (UNCRTD) - also referred to as 'Basel Convention' - through United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment).
Aims
Control the import, export and transit of hazardous waste and other waste covered by the Convention and ensure their environmentally sound management and disposal. Through the Convention: reduce transboundary movements of hazardous waste and other waste subject to the Basel Convention to a minimum consistent with their environmentally sound management; dispose of hazardous wastes and other wastes generated as close as possible to their source of generation; minimize generation of hazardous waste in terms of quantity and degree of hazard; ensure strict control over movements of hazardous waste across borders; prohibit shipment of hazardous waste to countries lacking the legal, administrative or technical capacity to dispose of it in an environmentally sound manner; assist developing countries and transition economies in environmentally sound management of their hazardous and other waste.
