History

1987, by resolution 1987/41 of United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Established as an autonomous body under the auspices of the United Nations (UN) on signature of official agreement, 9 Oct 1987, by the United Nations and the Government of Malta. Inaugurated, 15 Apr 1988, by the United Nations Secretary-General. Also referred to as United Nations International Institute on Ageing -- Institut international sur le vieillissement des Nations Unies.

Aims

Facilitate, in a practical way, the implementation of the Vienna International Plan of Action on Aging adopted by the United Nations in 1982, and of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, 2002.
