History
Established within the framework of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN).
Aims
Serve as a focal point for work concerning substantive and operational activities of the secretariats of the five United Nations regional commissions with the concerned offices, programmes and departments at Headquarters, as well as with relevant intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations in New York; provide executive secretaries, permanent missions of States Members of the UN and observer missions at Headquarters with information on selected activities and decisions of the regional commissions; inform Headquarters of relevant activities and decisions of the regional commissions; follow up with Headquarters offices, including UNDP, UNFPA and UNICEF, concerning matters which are of interest to regional commissions; represent executive secretaries at intergovernmental, interagency and intersecretariat meetings at Headquarters and keep them informed of relevant decisions adopted at these meetings; facilitate coordination and cooperation among regional commissions in planning and implementation of programmes and on issues of common interest to regional commissions; provide technical services for meetings of executive secretaries; maintain document reference services for technical reports issued by regional commissions and for UN Headquarters; promote effective cooperation between secretariats of the regional commissions and Headquarters services, especially in respect to the provisions by regional commissions of inputs for the global policy-making processes of the central UN organs; facilitate communications between regional commissions, relevant committees, bodies of the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council.
