Founded

1880 St Petersburg Russia

History

Founded to help impoverished Jews in the Pale of Settlement, giving them training in vocational and educational skills. After World War I, spread to Eastern Europe, then to Western Europe, and later to other Jewish communities in need around the world. Became a world federation of national organizations in 1921. After World World II, established workshops providing support and vocational training in refugee camps across Europe and headquarters moved to Geneva (Switzerland). Became a truly international organization in 1960, moving into the developing world, setting up training centres, clinics, self-help and mother and child care programmes across Africa, Asia and Latin America. Programmes are now established in 5 continents, both in the developed and the developing world. Previously known as World ORT Union (WOU) -- Union mondiale ORT -- Unión Mundial ORT -- Weltverband ORT. Present name adopted 2000.

Provide formal education, skills-training and self-help projects for needy communities to put people on the path to economic independence.
