History

Founded as successor to Committee of Jewish Delegations, set up 1918. Initially set up to mobilize Jewish people and democratic forces against the Nazi onslaught.

Aims

Foster the unity and creative survival of the Jewish people and its spiritual, cultural and social heritage. To that end: secure the rights, status, and interests of Jews and Jewish communities everywhere and defend them wherever they are denied, violated, or imperilled; intensify the bonds of world Jewry with Israel as the central creative force in Jewish life and strengthen the ties of solidarity among Jewish communities everywhere; act on behalf of participating communities before governmental, intergovernmental and other international authorities on matters concerning the Jewish people; cooperate with all people on the basis of universal ideas of peace, freedom and justice.
