History

Jan 1949, Montevideo (Uruguay), as Centre for Scientific Cooperation of UNESCO for Latin America, within the framework of B-XB3383 - UNESCO. In 1975, adopted the title UNESCO Regional Office for Science and Technology for Latin America and the Caribbean (ROSTLAC) – Bureau régional de science et de technologie de l'UNESCO pour l'Amérique latine et les Caraïbes – Oficina Regional de Ciencia y Tecnologia de la UNESCO para América Latina y el Caribe (ORCYT), also known by initials UNESCO/ROSTLAC. Agreement signed between UNESCO and the Government of Uruguay, Oct 1987. From 1995, functions as UNESCO Montevideo Office – Bureau de l'UNESCO à Montevideo – Oficina de UNESCO en Montevideo, also referred to as UNESCO Oficina de Montevideo. 1995, incorporation of the Education Sector, followed by Social Sciences Programme and Communication and Information Sector, 1999. In 2000, Culture Sector joins the Office.

Aims

Work to strengthen scientific, technological and innovation policies and ensure international cooperation in various environmental sciences, basic sciences, engineering and science policy.
