Apr 1969, as Comité Intergubernamental Coordinador de la Cuenca del Plata (CABEI), following ratification of the River Plate Basin Treaty -- Traité du Bassin du Rio de la Plata -- Tratado de la Cuenca de la Plata, originally signed 23 Apr 1969, Brasilia (Brazil); definitely ratified, 1972. Sometimes referred to in English as River Plate Basin System.

Aims

Promote and support development programmes for the area covered by the River Plate and its affluents, including questions of water resources and navigation, soils conservation and improvement, transports, health, education, environment.

Committee responsible for implementing the decisions of the Foreign Ministers of the member countries who normally celebrate the Reunión de Cancilleres de los Paises de la Cuenca del Plata (once a year), and for promoting and coordinating assistance from international institutions.
