9 Sep 1966, as a regional body. Became an intergovernmental organization in 1975. Serves as a technical institution of Central American Integration System (SICA). Also referred to in English as Central American Regional Water Resources Committee.


Coordinate activities of the region in the fields of meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, climate and climate change, with a special commitment regarding water and water resources management, and increased vulnerability due to climate change.

Carries out studies on the El Niño and La Niña phenomena and other research projects. Organizes training courses, fora, discussions and exchange of experience. Currently developing: indices for analysing environmental vulnerability; Central American meteorological and oceanographical networks; hydrometeorological support centre; Plan Centroamerican para la Gestión Integrada del Recurso Hidricos (PACAGIRH) - acting as secretariat of the consultative group on water.
