Established 1988, by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment). Nobel Peace Prize Winner, 2007.

Aims

As a scientific and intergovernmental body, review and assess the most recent scientific, technical and socio-economic information produced worldwide relevant to the understanding of climate change for decision-makers.

Activities

Monitoring/evaluation; research/documentation; guidance/assistance/consulting. Main activity is production of periodical assessment reports with Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) finalized in 2014. Working Group I (Physical Science Basis) assesses the physical scientific aspects of the climate system and climate change; Working Group II (Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability) assesses vulnerability of socio-economic and natural systems to climate change, negative and positive consequences of climate change, and options for adapting to it; Working Group III (Mitigation): assesses options for mitigating climate change through limiting or preventing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing activities that remove them from the atmosphere.
