1975, at the initiative of scientists from the region with the signature of the UNDP/UNESCO project RLA/75/047 by the Governments of Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, as Programa de Biotecnologia para Entrenamiento de Posgrado en Ciencias Biológicas. Current title adopted 1986.
Accelerate scientific and technological development of participating countries in the field of basic biological sciences; promote scientific research in biological problems related to development and well-being of peoples of the region; stimulate technical cooperation among participating countries through collaboration of biologists in their endeavours of research and training.
