Established 26 Jun 1981, Banjul (Gambia), within the framework of H-XD3027 - OAU, under the T-XT8162 - African Charter of Human and Peoples' Rights (Banjul Protocol), which entered into force 21 Oct 1986, on ratification by an absolute majority of OAU member states. The Commission was officially installed in Banjul, 12 Jun 1989, and is the main organ entrusted with the enforcement of the Charter. Statutes registered in OAU doc Cab/LEG/67/Rev 5. Currently a legal organ of D-XD8572 - African Union (AU).
Promote human and peoples' rights; ensure protection of these rights under conditions laid down by the Charter; interpret all provisions of the Charter; perform all tasks which may be entrusted to it by the Assembly of Heads of States and Governments.
