History

May 1970, Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire), as Union of Producers, Transporters and Distributors of Electric Power in Africa (UPDEA) -- Union des producteurs, transporteurs et distributeurs d'énergie électrique d'Afrique. Also previously known in English as Union of Producers, Conveyors and Distributors of Electric Power in Africa. Current title adopted 2013.

Aims

Be the primary catalyst in the realization of access to electricity for all the people of Africa; in this framework, support and facilitate development and integration of the African power sector.

Structure

Congress (every 3 years); General Assembly (annual), comprising all Active and Affiliate members. Executive Committee (meets twice a year), composed of 16 members representing the various sub-regions of the continent (North, West, Central, South and East) and includes President, 5 Vice-Presidents and General Comptroller. Scientific Committee is the technical organ. Study Committees (6): Operation, Maintenance and Development of Electric Systems in Africa; Rural Electrification; Customer Management; Energy Efficiency and Development of Renewable Energies; Restructuring and Financing of the Electric Sector in Africa; Competitiveness of Human Resources of Member Companies of the Union. General Secretariat, led by Secretary General.
