Founded 4-8 Feb 1980, Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire), at inaugural meeting as Union of African Water Suppliers (UAWS) -- Union africaine des distributeurs d'eau (UADE). Present name adopted, Accra (Ghana), Feb 2004. Statutes modified: 5-9 Apr 1982, Rabat (Morocco); 31 Jan 1994, Dakar (Senegal); Feb 2008, Cotonou (Benin), 2010 Kampala (Uganda).
Undertake programmes and support knowledge sharing in sustainable water management - its science, practice and policy - through professional development, networking and advocacy; support members in their efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and other near-term targets that have been established for Africa; advocate a balanced approach to utility management, based on corporate governance that is commercially sound, financially self-sustaining and environmentally compliant; foster and promote all actions of cooperation and exchanges in the field of professional training.
