Founded 16-17 Nov 1974, Brussels (Belgium), as Union of European and International Public Services Unions -- Union des syndicats des services publics européens et internationaux (USSPEI), abbreviation Union des syndicats (UdS), following decision at a preliminary meeting, 15-17 Mar 1974, Ispra (Italy). Since Congress in 1994, Florence (Italy), also referred to by abbreviated title Union syndicale fédérale (USF). Also officially referred to in a number of European languages as Union Syndicale - European Public Service -- Union syndicale - Service public européen -- Unión Sindical - Servicio Público Europeo -- Gewerkschaftsbund - Europäischer Öffentlicher Dienst -- União Sindical - Serviço Público Europeu -- Unione Sindacale - Servizio Pubblico Europeo -- Vakbondsvereniging - Europese Overheidsdienst -- Fagforening - Europaeiske Offentlig Tjeneste -- Sindikalistiki Enosi - Evropaiki Dimosia Ipiresia.
Aims
Establish major common principles - internal and external solidarity, social rights, right to employment, trade union rights, equality between men and women, stability of employment, human rights; maintain a constant two-way flow of information on these principles between member organizations and their members; coordinate and organize interests of union members and develop resources and collaborative efforts among them; secure and maintain employment opportunities and improve working conditions in the interests of all working people and in the face of privately manipulated markets and currency flows; protect interests of workers in the Third World; administer common means for action and consultation, including those of a legal or political nature; represent member organizations before relevant bodies in defence of common interests - staff regulations, remuneration, right of negotiation; coordinate and harmonize action of member organizations concerning European Community and/or international matters of common interest; deal with inter-trade union and international relations.
