Established 1 Nov 1993, Brussels (Belgium), as Committee of the Regions of the European Communities – Comité des régions des Communautés européennes, within the framework of the F-XF2147 - European Union (EU) under the T-XT9113 - Treaty on European Union (Maastricht Treaty). Scope enlarged under T-XT9706 - Treaty of Amsterdam and T-XT0128 - Nice Treaty. 1st plenary session: 9-10 Mar 1994, Brussels. Full title Committee of the Regions of the European Union – Comité des régions de l'Union européenne – Comité van de Regio's van de Europese Unie. Since the T-XT2073 - Treaty of Lisbon came into force 2009, acts as an advisory body to F-XF0667 - European Parliament (EP), E-XE3068 - Council of the European Union and E-XE2442 - European Commission (EC). Also referred to as European Committee of the Regions.

Aims

Involve regional and local authorities in the European decision-making process and thus encourage greater participation from fellow citizens; advise the European Commission and the Council of the European Union on proposed legislation, programmes and policies relevant to the regions; provide consultation to the European Parliament as requested. Provide a consultative role to local authorities in all planned EC/EU legislation in the fields of: education; youth; public health; culture; trans/European networks in the areas of transport, telecommunications and energy infrastructures; economic and social cohesion; employment policy; social policy; environment; vocational training; transport.
