History

Established 1969, London (UK), as Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Pollution -- Groupe mixte d'experts chargé d'étudier les aspects scientifiques de la pollution des mers -- Grupo Mixto de Expertos sobre los Aspectos Cientificos de la Contaminación de las Aguas del Mar -- Obedinennaja Gruppa Ekspertov po Naucnym Aspektam Zagrjaznenija Morskoj Sredy, at headquarters of IMO, with participation of 13 scientists and representatives from the following United Nations Agencies: IMO, FAO, UNESCO and WMO. Since 1970, WHO, IAEA, UN, UNEP and IOC joined subsequently as co-sponsors. Subsequently changed title to IMO/FAO/UNESCO-IOC/WMO/WHO/IAEA/UN/UNEP Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP) -- Groupe mixte d'experts OMI/FAO/UNESCO-COI/OMM/OMS/AIEA/ONU/PNUE chargé d'étudier les aspects scientifiques de la protection de l'environnement marin -- Grupo Mixto de Expertos OMI/FAO/UNESCO-COI/OMM/OMS/OIEA/Naciones Unidas/PNUMA sobre los Aspectos Cientificos de la Protección del Medio Marino -- IMO/FAO/JUNESKO-MOK/VMO/VOZ/MAGATE/OON/JUNEP Obedinennaja Gruppa Ekspertov po Naucnym Aspektam Zascity Morskoj Sredy, 1993. UNIDO became co-sponsor 2006 and UNDP 2010; WHO withdrew prior to 2011. Provide authoritative, independent, interdisciplinary scientific advice to organizations and member governments to support the protection and sustainable use of the marine environment.
