History

Founded following the archives regulation by E-XE3068 - Council of the European Union, then the Council of the European Communities, and E-XE2442 - European Commission (EC), then the Commission of the European Communities to open their archives to the public. A subsequent agreement in 1984, between the Commission of the European Communities and F-XF3293 - European University Institute (EUI) laid the groundwork for establishing the Archives in Florence (Italy). The Archives opened to researchers and the public in 1986. A 2011 Memorandum of Understanding between the EUI and the EC reinforced the Historical Archives' role. In Mar 2015 the Council of the European Union amended the Archives Regulation 354 of 1983 by adopting a new Council Regulation. The most recent Framework Partnership Agreement was signed 17 Mar 2023, setting the strategic frame for enhanced cooperation and partnership between the HAEU and the EU Institutions for a period of five years.

Aims
