The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

1965, pursuant to agreement between Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Government of Argentina. Part of IDB Vice-Presidency of Countries (VPC).

Aims

Promote and consolidate Latin American and Caribbean integration at the sub-regional, regional, inter-regional, hemispheric and international levels through: capacity-building in trade and integration; support to research networks for sustaining policy reforms to reinforce efficiency of research centres and individual experts, thus facilitating decision-making on integration and trade-related issues in the public and private sectors; public outreach.

Activities

Works mainly in the framework of the Joint IDB/INTAL-WTO Program to Support Trade Negotiations in Latin America and the Caribbean. Focus is on the following thematic areas: development of physical infrastructure; legal aspects of integration agreements; macroeconomic coordination and convergence; integration and changes in the Latin American and Caribbean productive structure; social issues at the sub-regional level; integration and development of border areas; readiness of the region's countries to adhere to NAFTA or relate to the European Union or APAC and participate in hemispheric convergence; intra-sub-regional direct investment flows promoted by integration and economic complementation agreements; harmonization of services market regulations; development of sub-regional information systems. Organizes specialized training programmes for government officials and civil society representatives in trade and integration matters; provides technical assistance to increase efficiency in government consultations with civil society for formulation and enforcement of trade and integration policies; supports research networks; carries out research work; provides technical assistance to governments and institutions at academic and business levels; provides training in support of regional integration and cooperation processes; organizes workshops, fora and special events. Since 2001, hosts Technical Coordination Committee Secretariat of the 'Initiative for Regional Infrastructure Integration in South America', made up of IDB, CAF and FONPLATA.
