History

Established following a proposal 7-9 Jul 1987, Abuja (Nigeria), on adoption and signing of a Protocol at 10th meeting of Authority of Heads of State and Government of F-XD3462 - Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), as a merger of the two existing health institutions in the sub-region, H-XD4575 - West African Health Community (WAHC) and H-XD3021 - Organisation de coordination et de coopération pour la lutte contre les grandes endémies (OCCGE).

Organization came into effect on ratifying of protocol by parliaments of ECOWAS member states.

Structure

Heads of State and Member States Governments Authority; Council of Ministers; Assembly of Ministers of Health; General Directorate, headed by General Director. Departments (5): Development of Human Resources; Planification and Technical Assistance; Primary Health Care and Fight against Diseases; Research and Information System of the Sanitary Management; Administration and Finances.
