History

1939, as Service général autonome de la maladie du sommeil en Afrique occidentale française et au Togo. Name changed, 1945, to Service général d'hygiène mobile et de prophylaxie (SGHMP). Current name adopted 1956. From 25 Apr 1960 until Dec 2000, acted as headquarters and was a research centre of Coordination and Cooperation Organization for the Control of the Major Endemic Diseases (OCCGE). Subsequently became public institution, directly linked to the Ministry of Health in Burkina Faso, 2001.

Aims

Combat major endemic diseases in Africa, with emphasis on: malaria; dracunculosis; trypanosomiasis; bilharzia; sexually transmitted diseases; AIDS and opportunistic diseases, including tuberculosis; vaccinology.

Activities

Main areas: (1) Research - priority health problems of member states for action development; (2) Training - internships for paramedical workers, doctoral students, post-doctoral researchers; (3) International Technical Support - at member states' request, planning for control programmes, conduct of training workshops, programme evaluation, epidemiology and public health intervention, laboratory quality control; technical support and expertise to international organizations.
