1965, Tokyo (Japan), on the initiative of parliamentarians from 5 Asian nations: Republic of China (Taiwan), Japan, Republic of Korea, Philippines and Thailand, as Asian Parliamentarians' Union (APU) -- Union parlementaire d'Asie. Present name adopted 9 Oct 1980.

Aims

Achieve and preserve freedom and democracy, so as to secure enduring peace and prosperity in Asia and the Pacific; strengthen mutual understanding and unity of all nations and peoples in Asia and the Pacific; promote economic cooperation and exchanges of culture and technology so as to enhance common welfare on a humanitarian basis; discuss all matters affecting peace and security in Asia and the Pacific and carry out decisions that may be agreed upon; respect principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, and principles of non-interference in the international affairs of other countries.
