Jun 1993, Managua (Nicaragua), on approval by 23rd Regular General Assembly of D-XD3030 - OAS, as a committee of U-XE5708 - Inter-American Economic and Social Council (IA-ECOSOC). Also referred to as Special Committee on Trade and by Spanish initials CEC. Replaced U-XE0532 - Special Committee for Consultation and Negotiation (CECON), set up Feb 1970. Last met 1996; not expected to reconvene before completion of negotiations on U-XF4513 - Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) - 2005.
Promote trade liberalization and economic integration among countries of the Western hemisphere; suggest measures for coordination of CIES technical assistance in the area of trade and related matters.
Committee (meeting annually) comprises senior officials of OAS governments responsible for trade and related matters, and elects Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Rapporteur. Meetings may also be held at Ministerial level. Advisory Group, composed of 9 senior trade policy officials from member states. Supported by technical unit within the OAS Secretariat.
