6 Feb 1968, under the name Regional Centre for Training Research and Post-Graduate Study in Tropical Biology, as one of the Regional Centres/Project of D-XD3257 - Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO). Name changed, 10 Jan 1969, to SEAMEO Regional Centre for Tropical Biology (BIOTROP) -- Centre régional de biologie tropicale de la SEAMEO and subsequently to Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Tropical Biology (SEAMEO BIOTROP) -- Centre régional de biologie tropicale de l'Asie du Sud-Est, 1 Jul 1982. Current name readopted as previously changed, 10 Jan 1969.

Increase capability in biological research and training relevant to regional and economic needs; assist the member states to identify biological problems.
