Activities embedded into frameworks of F-XF9983 - World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and F-XF1615 - Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). Collects, quality assures and analyses data under the auspices of B-XB3556 - World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Operated by Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) (GPCC is a special organizational unit of DWD).
Collect and evaluate precipitation data from monthly and daily in situ station observations worldwide; calculate gridded precipitation climatologies and analysis for the land surface of the earth; estimate errors of observation data and analyses; serve as observational reference data sets and calibration point for global satellite based analysis and verification of model based global and regional re-analysis data sets.
