History

Established under Article II of T-XT9663 - Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), preparation underway through E-XE3237 - Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). Organization will come into existence upon the entry into force of the Treaty, which will happen 180 days after the signing and ratification of the Treaty by the 44 States listed in annex 2 to the Treaty. Seat in Vienna (Austria).

Ensure implementation of the Treaty's provisions and provide a forum for consultation and cooperation.

Structure

To comprise 3 organs: Conference of the States Parties (meeting annually), will as the principal organ oversee the Treaty's implementation and the activities of the other two organs; Executive Council, the principal decision-making body of the Organization and responsible for supervising activities of the Technical Secretariat, will comprise representatives of 51 states party to the Treaty, including 10 from Africa, 7 from Eastern Europe, 9 from Latin America and the Caribbean, 7 from the Middle East and South Asia, 10 from North America and Western Europe and 8 from Southeast Asia, the Pacific and the Far East. Technical Secretariat, headed by a Director-General, will assist States parties to implement the Treaty, carry out verification and other functions and will supervise and coordinate the operation of the International Monitoring System (IMS) and operate the International Data Centre (IDC) at Vienna (Austria).
