History
Established Apr 1985, on coming into force of T-XT8316 - International Tropical Timber Agreement, 1983 (ITTA), negotiated under the auspices of the Integrated Programme for Commodities of E-XE3381 - UNCTAD. Operational activities commenced Jan 1987, on opening of headquarters in Yokohama (Japan). New treaty, T-XT9482 - International Tropical Timber Agreement, 1994, also negotiated under the auspices of UNCTAD, came into force on 1 Jan 1997. Successor agreement, T-XT0609 - International Tropical Timber Agreement, 2006 entered into force Dec 2011.
Aims
Develop internationally agreed policy documents to promote sustainable forest management and forest conservation; assist tropical member countries to adapt such policies to local circumstances and implement them in the field through projects.
