Established 1974, Vienna (Austria), as European Centre for Social Welfare Training and Research (ECSWTR) -- Centre européen de formation et de recherche en action sociale -- Europäisches Zentrum für Ausbildung und Forschung auf dem Gebiet der Sozialen Wohlfahrt, on signature of an agreement between A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN) and the Federal Government of Austria (host government). Subsequent agreements, signed 1978 and 1981, reconfirmed the Centre as an autonomous intergovernmental organization affiliated to the United Nations. Statutes amended and present name adopted in 1989. Also known in German as Europäisches Zentrum. Previously also known under the acronym ECSWPR.
