History

Launched under the auspices of the U-XF6140 - Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe (later succeeded by F-XM3681 - Regional Cooperation Council (RCC)) and E-XE3382 - UNDP to function as an executive arm of the Regional Implementation Plan on Combating the Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and a focal point for SALW-related activities in South East Europe. The Regional Implementation Plan was formulated and adopted Nov 2001; revised in 2006 and 2014.

Aims

Work to strengthen capacities of national and regional stakeholders to control and reduce proliferation and misuse of small arms and light weapons, advance gender equality, facilitate regional cooperation and thus contribute to enhanced stability, security and development in South Eastern and Eastern Europe.

Structure

Regional Steering Group (RSG) for Small Arms and Light Weapons (meets annually) provides political and strategic guidance and indigenous support, and is composed of representatives of the governments of the states concerned, F-XM3681 - Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), UNDP and observers from institutions such as F-XF2147 - European Union (EU), C-XC3005 - NATO, F-XF0947 - Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and civil society.
