History

30 Jun 1896, as International Federation of Ship, Dock and River Workers, meetings having been held previously in: 1893, Paris (France); 1894, Zurich (Switzerland); 1895, Milan (Italy); 1896, London (UK). Also referred to as International Association of Dock, Wharf and Riverside Workers -- Fédération internationale des dockers et marins. Present name adopted 1898. Current Constitution adopted Nov 1998.

Aims

Help and support affiliated unions and transport workers worldwide; fight for social justice, against unemployment and poverty, for decent wages and working conditions and for a safe and healthy working environment; foster the advancement of democratic trade unionism; promote and defend fundamental human and trade union rights; promote development of efficient public transport offering a quality service to users and safe working conditions to transport employees; provide research and information services to affiliates and general assistance to transport workers in difficulty.

Structure

Congress (every 4 years). Executive Board comprises 41 members and Secretary General. Management Committee of 13 members designated by the Board from among its members. Secretariat, headed by Secretary General. Regional Offices (7): Africa; African Francophone; Asia Pacific; Asian Sub-Region; Europe; Europe Sub-Region; Inter-American. Congresses open; other meetings and conferences closed. 'ITF Seafarers Trust' funds projects which benefit the seafarers and their families.
