8 May 1997, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), as ECA Subregional Development Centre for Southern Africa (SA/SRDC Lusaka) -- CEA Centre de développement sous-régional pour l'Afrique australe (CDSR/AA), within the framework of United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), under Resolution 828 (XXXII) of the 32nd Session (23rd meeting) of the ECA Conference of Ministers, as one of 5 subregional centres with the task of achieving the objectives of African Economic Community (AEC) as defined by Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community (Abuja treaty). Derives from Multinational Programming and Operational Centre, UNECA/MULPOC, Lusaka (MULPOC, Lusaka) -- Centre multinational de programmation et d'éxécution de projets, Lusaka, set up Nov 1977, Lusaka, to cover Eastern and Southern Africa as one of 5 'MULPOCs', replacing the subregional offices and the 3 United Nations Development Advisory Teams (UNDATS) under Resolution 311 (XIII) of the 4th meeting of ECA Conference of Ministers. The 'MULPOCS' constituted the operational field arm of UN/ECA and were all transformed into ECA Subregional Development Centres (UNECA/SRDCs) under the same Resolution. Also referred to by initials UNECA/SDRC-SA -- CEA/CDSR-AA.


Provide leverage on multidisciplinary analytical skills; convene power and consensus building strength to facilitate harmonization of policies and strategies for harnessing regional resources to meet development priorities of the Southern Africa subregion.
