History
1963, within the framework of E-XE4174 - United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), to cover the countries of North Africa. Set up as a Multinational Programming and Operational Centre -- Centre multinational de programmation et d'éxécution de projets (UNECA/MULPOC), one of 5 'MULPOCs', replacing the subregional offices and the 3 U-XU0264 - United Nations Development Advisory Teams (UNDATS) under Resolution 311 (XIII) of the 4th meeting of ECA Conference of Ministers. Together with the other 4 MULPOCs: E-XE6080 - ECA Subregional Office for Southern Africa (SRO-SA Lusaka) for Eastern and Southern Africa; E-XE5963 - ECA Sub-Regional Office for Eastern Africa (SRO-EA Kigali), for the countries of the CEPGL; E-XE5962 - ECA Sub-Regional Office for Central Africa (ECA/SRO-CA), for the other countries of Central Africa; E-XE5960 - ECA Sub-Regional Office for West Africa (SRO-WA), for the countries of ECOWAS - constituted the operational field arm of UN/ECA. Changed title to ECA Subregional Development Centre for Northern Africa (NA/SDRC Tangiers) -- CEA Centre de développement sous-regional pour l'Afrique du Nord (CDSR/AN), 8 May 1997, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), under Resolution 828 (XXXII) of the 32nd Session (23rd meeting) of the ECA Conference of Ministers, under which all MULPOCs were transformed into ECA Subregional Development Centres (UNECA/SRDCs) covering subregional economic communities as defined by T-XT9114 - Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community (Abuja treaty) and with the task of achieving the objectives of F-XF2245 - African Economic Community (AEC). Subsequently referred to as ECA Subregional Office for North Africa -- Bureau sous-régional de la CEA pour l'Afrique du Nord. Previously also referred to by the initials UNECA/SDRC-NA -- CEA/CDSR-AN.
Aims
Assist the North African subregional economic community to promote and strengthen the subregional economic integration process and achieve the objectives of the African Economic Community; provide support strategies and programmes for the enhancement of production and trade; promote institutional economic cooperation and integration.
