8 May 1997, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), as ECA Subregional Development Centre for West Africa (WA/SDRC Niamey) -- CEA Centre de développement sous-régional pour l'Afrique de l'Ouest (CDSR/AO), within the framework of E-XE4174 - United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), under Resolution 828 (XXXII) of the 32nd Session (23rd meeting) of the ECA Conference of Ministers, as one of 5 subregional centres with the task of achieving the objectives of F-XF2245 - African Economic Community (AEC) as defined by T-XT9114 - Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community (Abuja treaty). Derives from Multinational Programming and Operational Centre, UNECA/MULPOC, Niamey (MULPOC, Niamey) -- Centre multinational de programmation et d'éxécution de projets, Niamey, set up to cover the countries of F-XD3462 - Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as one of 5 'MULPOCs', replacing the subregional offices and the 3 U-XU0264 - United Nations Development Advisory Teams (UNDATS) under Resolution 311 (XIII) of the 4th meeting of ECA Conference of Ministers. The 'MULPOCS' constituted the operational field arm of UN/ECA and were all transformed into ECA Subregional Development Centres (UNECA/SRDCs) under the same Resolution. Also referred to as West African Subregional Development Centre and by the initials UNECA/SDRC-WA -- CEA/CDSR-AO.

Strengthen development cooperation and subregional integration within the framework of NEPAD and internationally agreed goals, including those set out in the Millennium Declaration.
