The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

Promote due attention to marine sciences through: (i) cooperation with international nongovernmental scientific bodies and programmes; (ii) support to cooperative undertakings and meetings, in particular between scientists from countries with developing and advanced capabilities in marine sciences; (ii) support to development and reinforcement of national infrastructure in marine sciences; (iv) publications.

Together with Major Interregional Project on Research and Training with a view to Integrated Management of Coastal Systems (COMAR) and Training and Education in Marine Science Programme (TREDMAR), comprises UNESCO's coastal and marine science programme and assists in implementation of projects funded by: GEF, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and other sources. Implements the marine component of the DIVERSITAS - International Programme of Biodiversity Science. Annual Floating University (FU), jointly executed with European Science Foundation (ESF), holds joint projects in the Baltic Sea with COMARNORTH. Instrumental in setting up ETI Biodiversity Centre.
