History

Founded at 8th American Scientific Congress, by representatives of 44 professional organizations distributed among 17 nations of the Western Hemisphere; 1st Congress, 1941, Havana (Cuba).

Constitution amended, 1956, Dallas TX (USA), at 9th Conference, to provide for individuals as members.

Aims

Provide a permanent forum for exchange of professional views and information for lawyers to promote the rule of law and protect democratic institutions in the Americas; establish and maintain relations among national and local organizations of lawyers in the region; advance the science of jurisprudence, particularly the study of comparative law; promote uniformity of laws; promote the rule of law and the administration of justice, encouraging establishment and maintenance of independent judicial systems in all countries of the Americas; preserve and defend human rights and liberties; guarantee to the peoples of the hemisphere the free exercise of their civil and political rights under democratic principles; uphold the honour of the legal profession; encourage cordial intercourse and fellowship among lawyers of the Americas.
