The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

16 May 1940, Washington DC (USA), at 8th American Scientific Congress, by representatives of 44 professional organizations distributed among 17 nations of the Western Hemisphere; 1st Congress, 1941, Havana (Cuba). Constitution amended, 1956, Dallas TX (USA), at 9th Conference, to provide for individuals as members.

Aims

Provide a permanent forum for exchange of professional views and information for lawyers to promote the rule of law and protect democratic institutions in the Americas; establish and maintain relations among national and local organizations of lawyers in the region; advance the science of jurisprudence, particularly the study of comparative law; promote uniformity of laws; promote the rule of law and the administration of justice, encouraging establishment and maintenance of independent judicial systems in all countries of the Americas; preserve and defend human rights and liberties; guarantee to the peoples of the hemisphere the free exercise of their civil and political rights under democratic principles; uphold the honour of the legal profession; encourage cordial intercourse and fellowship among lawyers of the Americas.

Activities

Organizes Conference (about every 18 months); regional seminars. Permanent Committees (19), serving as a forum for presentation of papers related to each committee's focus and reporting back to the Conference:

 • (III) Administrative Law (includes: Labour Law, Municipal Law, Food and Drug Law);

 • (IV) Civil Law and Procedure;

 • (V) Business, Banking and Securities Law;

 • (VI) Criminal Law and Procedure;

 • (VII) Military Law;

 • (VIII) Development and Integration Law;

 • (IX) Legal Education;

 • (X) Fiscal Law;

 • (XI) Natural Resources and Environmental Protection;

 • (XII) Human Rights Law;

 • (XIII) Practice of Law;

 • (XIV) Labour Law and Social Security;

 • (XV) Intellectual and Industrial Property Law;

 • (XVI) Telecommunications, Science and Technology Law;

 • (XVII) Corporate and Institutional Counsel;

 • (XVIII) International Arbitration Law;

 • (XIX) Women's Rights.

 • Inter-American Academy of Comparative Law, set up 1941, Havana (Cuba), as a permanent adjunct IABA - Head Offices: Havana 1941-1963; Lima (Peru) 1963-1973; 1973 to present, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil);

 • Inter-American Bar Foundation, incorporated Apr 1957, under the laws of Pennsylvania (USA), as a companion organization of IABA;

 • Inter-American Copyright Institute (ICI), set up 1973, Rio de Janeiro, pursuant to a resolution adopted at XVIII Conference of IABA.
