Founded following a call to set up such a centre voiced at 26th International Geological Congress, 1980, Paris. Follows the work of the (France) Centre d'Etudes Géologiques et Minières (CEGM), which had been founded in 1931.
Develop training and exchanges between geoscientists from all countries, in particular for the benefit of developing countries; cooperate with public or private, national and international organizations interested in earth sciences, as well as with companies and associations interested in international cooperation in the field of geology.
