The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

1956, Dakar (Senegal). Since 1961 operates as an institute of Coordination and Cooperation Organization for the Control of the Major Endemic Diseases (OCCGE) specializing in nutrition. Complemented by Centre régional de recherches en alimentation et nutrition (CRAN). Both CRAN and OCCGE ceased to exist.

Aims

Develop research in: nutritional biochemistry; human physiopathology related to malnutrition; nutritional surveillance; diarrhoeal diseases and oral rehydration; act as a reference centre on nutrition for the Sahel region.

Activities

Field surveys for member countries: food consumption; clinical and nutritional matters. Inquiries on specific topics such as: epidemiology and infant malnutrition; food consumption and nutrition in West Africa. Research projects: Nutritional value of locally produced new varieties; Protein deficiency and malnutrition, including studies of infant nutrition in the urban environment; Foetal malnutrition, maternal nutrition and perinatal mortality; Correlations between nutrition, infection and immunity; Nutritional anaemia; Aetiology of endemic goitre. Research agreements with French and Canadian national institutions and United Nations bodies. Organizes courses; disseminates information through documentation centre. Activities currently reorienting towards research on strategies for food security.
