Founded 1992, as Land-Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone Project (LOICZ) – Interaction terre-océan dans les zones côtières, a Core Project of U-XF3403 - International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) and a Core Science Project of U-XF1577 - International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP). Phase I: 1992-2002. Phase II: 2005-2012. As of 2015, a core project of F-XJ6881 - Future Earth and present name adopted.
