1962-03-01

History

Established by Resolution 58 (VI), adopted at 4th session of the Conference of Ministers of the E-XE4174 - United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). Began operations on 21 Nov 1963. First Statutes approved by ECA Resolution 93 (VI) of 27 Feb 1964, and its first Governing Council was elected in Nov 1964. Present Statutes adopted by ECA Resolution 350 (XIV), 27 Mar 1979, and subsequently by the UN General Assembly at its 34th Session. A subsidiary body of ECA.

Aims

Assist policymakers and other stakeholders in enhancing their skills in the areas of policymaking, long-term perspective planning and institutional and regulatory reforms, as well as facilitate the emergence of policy ideas and consensus positions in Africa.

Governing Council, comprising 12 members, 11 of which are African ministers of finance, economic development, and/or planning, with the 12th member state being the Under Secretary-General of the United Nations/Executive Secretary of UNECA. Management, Programmes and Administrative Units, including: Office of the Director; Capacity Development and Training Division; Administration; Library and Knowledge Management Division. Headquarters located in Dakar (Senegal).
