History

Constitutive Conference organized 1969, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), convened by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Organization of African Unity (OAU) - currently African Union (AU) Commission. Began functioning 1969. Since 11 May 1978, became the OAU Specialized Agency in the field of civil aviation. Constitution adopted 1969; revised 2001. New constitution of 2009 provisionally entered into force 11 May 2010. Since 11 May 2007, entrusted with responsibility of being Executing Agency for the implementation of the Yamoussoukro Decision by Ministers of Air Transport and endorsed by Assembly of Heads of States and Governments, 29 June 2007. Previously also referred to as Pan-African Civil Aviation Commission. Statutes registered in 'UNTS 1/14690'. Became autonomous from ICAO management, 1 Jan 2017.

Aims

Facilitate cooperation and coordination among African States towards development of integrated and sustainable air transport systems; foster implementation if ICAO SARPs and development of harmonized rules and regulations consistent with best international practices in civil aviation.
