History
Established on signature of the Barcelona Declaration at an inter-ministerial conference of the 15 member states of F-XF2147 - European Union (EU) and 12 countries of southern and eastern rim of the Mediterranean. Relaunched 13 Jul 2008, at Paris (France) Summit for the Mediterranean; endorsed, Nov 2008. With F-XF5884 - Greater Arab Free-Trade Area (GAFTA), J-XJ0273 - Euro-Mediterranean Free-Trade Area (EMEFTA) initially expected to be completed by 2010, but as yet not operational.
Aims
Bring together all countries of the European Union and 15 countries of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean; enhance regional cooperation, dialogue and implementation of projects and initiatives with tangible impact on citizens.
