History

Established 10 Dec 1997, Naples (Italy), on approval by conference of water managers and major operators of a study led by French Ministry of the Environment and International Office for Water (IOW). Set up to network systems in countries signatory to Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean (Barcelona Convention). National focal points set up following first meeting of EMWIS Management Committee, 17 Mar 1998, Paris (France). Implemented by an European Economic Interest Grouping (EEIG), whose statutes were signed by IOW, 15 June 1998. Also referred to as Euro-Mediterranean Water Information System.
