History

Established by a resolution adopted at 6th International American Conference at Ministerial Level, following proposals first made in 1903. A resolution for the creation of a Pan American Federation of Geographical Societies -- Fédération panaméricaine des sociétés de géographie had been adopted at 3rd Panamerican Scientific Congress, Lima (Peru), 1924. Statutes formally adopted at the Constituent Assembly, 1929, Mexico City (Mexico), and revised in: 1946, 1950, 1955, 1961, 1969. Agreements of specialized organization signed with D-XD3030 - OAS, 12 Jan 1949 and 6 May 1974.

Aims

Encourage, coordinate and publicize cartographical, geographical, historical and geophysical studies as well as other related scientific studies of interest to the Americas; promote and carry out studies, work and training in the aforementioned fields of activity; promote cooperation among organizations interested in these fields of activity in the Americas, and with related international organizations.

Structure

General Assembly (every 4 years); Directing Council (meeting annually), consists of representatives of the Governments of Member States; Commissions (4): Cartography - set up in 1941, located in Santiago (Chile); Geography - set up in 1946, located in Aguascalientes (Mexico); History - set up in 1946, located in Sao Paulo (Brazil); Geophysics - set up in 1969, located in San José (Costa Rica).

General Secretariat, headed by Secretary General; Commissions (4) and Vice-President. Meeting of Officers (twice a year).
